Abdel Laadjel receives NCAA Athlete of the Week for cross-country on Oct. 25.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The USTFCCCA announced its weekly cross-country awards on Monday, Oct. 25. Providence College Freshman Abdel Laadjel (Lucan, Ireland) was named NCAA XC Division I National Athlete of the Week for his performance at the CCSU Mini Meet in New Britain, Conn. on Friday, Oct. 23. This is the first time in program history that a male athlete from Providence has been named National Athlete of the Week during the cross country season.

The National Athlete of the Week is an award selected by the USTFCCCA at the beginning of each week and awarded to 10 collegiate cross-country athletes. The award highlights not only the best times, but also performances that were significant on the national level.

Running in only his second collegiate meet this past weekend, Laadjel picked up the win at the CCSU Mini Meet. He covered the 5k course in 14:41.1, nearly 11 seconds faster than his next closest competitor, and helped the Friars finish third in the team standings. Laadjel's time was just five seconds off from the course's record and was the fastest all-time for a Providence College athlete at the Stanley Park Course.

The Friars will be back in action on Friday, October 29th for the BIG EAST Championships in Carmel, Ind.
