PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated Stonehill College, 95-71, on Thursday, Oct. 21 in an exhibition game at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
FIRST HALF:
- A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) knocked down a mid-range jumper to get the Friars on the board first.
- The Friars held a 9-4 lead heading into the first media timeout.
- Alyn Breed (Powder Springs, Ga.) connected on the team's first three-pointer at the 14:35 mark.
- With 11:14 left in the first half, Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) dunked it off an assist by Noah Horchler (Melbourne Beach, Fla.).
- On the next defensive possession, Watson forced a steal, leading to a Brycen Goodine (New Bedford, Mass.) fastbreak score. The Friars took their first double-digit lead, 22-12.
- The teams traded several baskets as the Friars maintained their lead through the end of the first half.
- With a layup at the 0:55 mark, Goodine reached double-figures.
- Breed made a floater in the lane in the final second of the half.
- The Friars led 42-34 at halftime.
- Providence shot 17-30 (56.7%) from the field, 4-12 (33.3%) from three, and 4-5 (80.0%) from the free throw line.
- Stonehill shot 13-36 (36.1%) from the field, 6-12 (50.0%) from three, and 2-2 (100%) from the free throw line.
SECOND HALF:
- Horchler blocked a Stonehill layup attempt on the first possession of the half.
- Reeves scored the first basket of the second half for the Friars.
- With less than 17 minutes to play, Stonehill completed a quick 5-0 run to narrow their deficit to nine points.
- At the 15:13 mark, Reeves stole the ball and converted on the other end of the floor with a dunk.
- With 14:30 remaining, Justin Minaya (Harrington Park, N.J.) completed a three-point play. The Friars extended their lead to 16 points, 61-45.
- At the 11:24 mark, Al Durham (Lilburn, Ga.) finished in transition off the assist by Breed.
- On the following offensive possession, Minaya buried a second-chance three-pointer to extend the lead to 74-49.
- Ed Croswell (Philadelphia, Pa.) was a major presence in the paint in the second half. He finished a heavily contested layup in the paint at the 10:06 mark.
- At the 7:55 timeout, the Friars led 82-54.
- With just over two minutes left to play, Breed knocked down a three-pointer from the left corner to extend the Friar lead to 93-67.
NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence finished 38-60 (63.3%) from the field, 7-18 (38.9%) from three, and 12-16 (75.0%) from the free throw line.
- Stonehill finished 22-62 (35.5%) from the field, 8-20 (40.0%) from three, and 19-26 (73.1%) from the free throw line.
- Five players finished in double-figures for the Friars, in Breed, Durham, Goodine, Reeves, and Watson.
- Watson led the Friars in scoring with 17 points. Breed added 15 points.
- Durham led the Friars in both rebounds and assists, with eight and five, respectively.
- Horchler notched a team-high four blocks.
- Jackson Benigni led the way for Stonehill with a team-high 15 points and four rebounds.
WHAT'S NEXT:
- The Friars will take on Fairfield University in their season opener on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. and will be televised on FS1. In last season's opener, the Friars defeated Fairfield, 97-56, on Nov. 25, 2020.
