Men’s Basketball Falls Short to Georgetown, 73-72

Reeves contributed a season-high 28 points in the game.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Georgetown Hoyas, 73-72, on Saturday, Jan. 30 in Washington, DC. The Friars fall to 9-8 overall and 5-6 in BIG EAST play. A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) finished with a game-high 28 points and a total of six made three-pointers in the game. 

Reeves scored in the paint and from three-point territory for the first two Friars baskets. Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) and Alyn Breed (Powder Springs, Ga.) each added a score of their own in the first stretch. The Friars opened the game on a 10-0 run and forced a Georgetown timeout. 

With 14:33 remaining in the first half, Reeves made his second three-pointer of the game. Reeves added his third at the 13:30 mark. The Friars took a 22-10 lead into the 11:26 media timeout.

Following the timeout, Noah Horchler (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) threw down a contested dunk and Reeves continued his hot streak, adding his fourth three-pointer. With 7:19 left to play before halftime, Providence held control, 29-19.

At the 4:32 mark, Horchler knocked down his first three-pointer of the game. At the last first half media timeout, Providence led 37-28. In the final minutes of the first half, Georgetown was able to cut the deficit to four. 

The Friars led at halftime, 42-38. Providence shot 16-34 (47.1%) from the field, 5-11 (45.5%) from three, and 5-7 (71.4%) from the free throw line. Georgetown shot 15-33 (45.5%) from the field, 3-13 (23.1%) from three, and 5-6 (83.3%) from the free throw line.

At the 18:32 mark, Georgetown's Chudier Bile gave the Hoyas their first lead of the game, 43-42. Georgetown had overcome a 15-point Providence lead, which the Friars held at the 9:16 mark of the first half. By the first media timeout of the second half, the game was knotted at 47. 

With 13:34 remaining, Ed Croswell (Philadelphia, Pa.) converted an and-one for the Friars. Shortly after, Reeves and Georgetown's Jahvon Blair traded three-pointers. The Friars held a slim lead, 55-52. 

After the 7:43 media timeout, Reeves knocked down his sixth three-pointer. It continued to be a back-and-forth game. At the 5:09 mark, Watson completed a three-point play on the assist by David Duke (Providence, R.I.). Providence took a 65-62 advantage into the final five minutes of regulation.

The Hoyas retook the lead, 67-65, after Donald Carey contributed back-to-back baskets. The Friars used a timeout with 3:58 to play. With 2:16 remaining, the Friars took a 69-68 lead after baskets by Greg Gantt (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Duke.

The Friars then trailed by one point, 70-69, when Georgetown's Qudus Wahab made a jumper at the 1:16 mark. Still trailing, the Friars took a timeout with 0:16 to play. The Hoyas' Jahvon Blair extended the lead to 72-69 from the free throw line.

A layup by Breed narrowed the gap to one with 0:07 remaining. The Friars were behind by two entering their final offensive possession. Duke was fouled with under two seconds left, but only converted one shot from the free throw line. 

Providence finished 28-66 (42.4%) from the field, 8-21 (38.1%) from three, and 8-11 (72.7%) from the free throw line. Georgetown finished 26-64 (40.6%) from the field, 6-23 (26.1%) from three, and 15-19 (78.9%) from the free throw line. Chudier Bile registered a team-high 19 points for the Hoyas.

There were seven lead changes in the game. The Friars finished with three players in double-, in Reeves, Watson, and Breed. The Hoyas also had three-players in double-figures. Horchler had a team-high seven rebounds and Duke had a team-high seven assists. 

Up next, Providence will head back home to take on the Seton Hall Pirates on Wednesday, Feb. 3 in Alumni Hall at Providence College. The game is set for tip-off at 7:00 p.m. on FS1.
