PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Woman & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island and the national non-profit organization Swim Across America (SAA) continue to make waves in the fight against cancer with the 11th annual SAA-Rhode Island Event scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2020. In response to Covid-19 Pandemic, Swim Across America's national office changed all its Open Water events across the countRy to a nationwide Virtual Event. Rhode Island's annual Swim, held at Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narragansett, features the largest group of college athletes in the country and all funds raised by this event continue to support the work done in the Oncology Center at Women and Infants. The Friar family has raised nearly $19,000.00 so far this year and have contributed nearly $250,000.00 since the Rhode Island swim was founded eleven years ago.

This year's Virtual Event will include a video appearance by USA Swimming star, Rhode Island resident and three time Olympian Elizabeth Beisel. Student-Athletes from Brown University, Bryant University, Roger Williams University, Providence College and the University of Rhode Island have joined together again for this year's event. Student-athletes from Assumption College, Boston College, Boston University, Holy Cross, Northeastern University and the University of Connecticut have also participated making it the largest group of college athletes joining together for an event in the country.

Providence College Head Coach and SAA-RI Board member John O'Neill thanks the swimmers, families and friends of all programs for teaming up for the effort. "It's extraordinary to think how important this swim has become to all those whose families are impacted by cancer. In this time of Covid-19, to have so many of our teammates continue to support Swim Across America by registering, staying engaged and participating in the virtual event is a testament to how much the cause means to everyone. We all send our best wishes to the patients who benefit from the outstanding work being done by the doctors and research specialists at Women and Infants Hospital!"
