Providence College Athletics Hosts Career & Leadership Forum

The distinguished professionals included Dr. Sheila Harrity ’87, Dr. Jeanette Toney ’09, Traug Keller ‘21P and Adam Grossman.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.– Providence College Athletics hosted a Career & Leadership Forum for student-athletes on Monday, Jan. 13. They welcomed a panel of distinguished professionals and former athletes to campus for a career-oriented discussion and networking opportunity.
The four panelists invited to participate were:
Throughout the evening, the panelists offered insight and advice utilizing their own personal and professional experiences in their respective paths to becoming leaders in their fields. The event presented the opportunity for student-athletes to participate in an open Q&A with the panelists. Topics included:
·  StrengthFinders 2.0 - utilizing the Thomas Rath book to identify and turn talents into strengths.
· Value Proposition – understanding the importance of a simple value statement about why an employer should hire a student-athlete.
· "What Matters Most" – heightening the importance to do "homework" on what professional and personal issues matter most to the student-athlete.
· "Two Jobs Out "– a thought-provoking discussion about what type of job you want and the path to get there.
· Networking – a conversation on how to systematically and strategically build a professional network throughout the student-athlete's college career.
· Art of The Conversation –highlighting the importance of a face-to-face conversation and listening skills..
· What Do You Read? – accentuating the importance of reading for education (industry and personal development) and not just entertainment.
· What Do You Post? – emphasizing the need for a "firewall" between personal and professional social media postings
· Professional Brand – a review of what hiring managers look for with entry-level candidates– resume, accomplishments, internships, volunteerism, thought-leadership, etc.
· Athletic Experience -  underscoring what a student-athlete experience can represent to a hiring manager and how to present it
· The Interview – a conversation on preparing for an interview as if it were a game
The forum was open to student-athletes of all classes and saw over 80 attendees.Â

- Dr. Sheila Harrity '87Â -Superintendent-Director of Montachusett Regional Vocational School District in Massachusetts (2013 Massachusetts Principal of the Year & 2014 National High School Principal of the Year) and former Providence College women's basketball player.
- Dr. Jeanette Toney '09-Â Obstetrician and gynecologist at Tennova Health and former Providence College volleyball player.
- Traug Keller '21PÂ - Senior Vice President at ESPN in charge of Audio Operations and Providence College parent.
- Adam Grossman – Executive Vice President/Chief Marketing Officer for the Boston Red Sox.
