PROVIDENCE, R.I.- This past weekend, the Providence volleyball team hosted their 15thAnnual Friar Volleyball Classic. The Friars went 2-1 this weekend with senior, Jenae Alderson and transfer sophomore, Natalie Benson earning All-Tournament honors. The Friars could not have had as a successful weekend without the addition of their new teammate, Lydia Stalaboin. The Providence volleyball team collaborated with Team IMPACT, a non-profit organization, whose mission strives to improve the quality of life for children facing serious and chronic illnesses through the power of team to welcome Stalaboin to the Friars.

Stalaboin is a 14-year-old from Warwick, R.I. who has been courageously battling Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome since birth. Klippel trenaunay syndrome affects the development of bones, soft tissue, and blood vessels. Stalaboin was introduced by Friars Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson on Sept. 14 at 10:00 a.m. in a press conference in Alumni Hall on the campus of Providence College.

"We are excited to have Lydia in the Friar family. She has what we look for and teach in our players and staff- grit and gratitude. She has proven to be a fighter when faced with adversity and that's what makes her a perfect fit for PCVB." Royer-Johnson explained.

Following the press conference, Stalaboin and her Friar teammates had the opportunity to converse before taking on the Coppin State Eagles. Stalaboin took the sidelines with the Friars sitting alongside Royer-Johnson and assistant coach Richard Gomes Jr. The Friars defeated the Eagles in four sets with the newest Friar right there with her new teammates.

When asked about what quote gives Stalaboin strength and motivates her, the 14-year-old exclaimed, "Hard days are the best because that is when champions are made."
