PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team opened its three-game homestand with a 75-61 loss to the Xavier Musketeers on Feb. 16 in the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Providence led by six at halftime, but Xavier outscored the Friars, 49-29, in the second half.

Nate Watson scored a team-high 16 points and was the lone player in double figures. He added four rebounds and one block to his final line.

The Friars fell in an early 6-3 hole before going on a 7-0 run and creating a 10-6 advantage (14:53). Providence's lockdown defense allowed their early success, turning Xavier over five times in the opening seven minutes and nine times in the first 20 minutes.

Xavier evened up the score, 14-14, before Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) scored his first basket of the afternoon with a corner triple. Providence entered the third media timeout (7:44) with a one-point lead, 19-18.

David Duke's (Providence, R.I.) ability to create on the offensive end left the Dunkin' Donuts Center in awe with 6:12 left to play in the half. Duke crossed over Quentin Goodin at the top of the key before finishing a layup with contact on the block. Duke finished with seven points, two assists and two rebounds.

Nate Watson (Arlington, Va.), Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) and Duke produced a 9-0 run late in the half to give the Friars a 30-22 advantage with 2:27 left to play.

The trio finished with 24 of the Friars' 32 points in the half to head into the break with a 32-26 lead. They shot a combined 9-20 (45 percent) from the field. Nate Watson led the group with team-high 10 points while he brought down three rebounds.

The Musketeers scored the first eight points of the second half to build a two-point lead, 34-32. All four baskets came in the paint which forced Head Coach Ed Cooley to call his first timeout of the half. Makai Ashton-Langford (Worcester, Mass.) knocked down a baseline jumper to end the run at 36-34 in favor of the Musketeers.

Xavier built an 11-point lead with 13:30 left to play in the game, Quentin Goodin and Naji Marshall knocked down back-to-back threes to give them a 49-38 advantage. Drew Edwards (Perry Hall, Md.) put an end to the Musketeers 8-0 run with his second three of the game and cut the lead to single digits, 49-41 (12:30).

The Musketeers shot an efficient 19-26 (73 percent) from the field in the second half, which helped extend their lead to 63-49 (4:37). Providence attempted to trim the lead with an Isaiah Jackson trey from the top of the key (68-54) and late full-court press but could not stop the Musketeers' hot shooting from the field. Xavier held on for the 75-61 victory.

Tyrique Jones paced the Musketeers with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Up next, Providence will host St. John's on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 8:30 p.m. in the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The game will be broadcasted on FS1.
