HAMDEN, Conn. - The Providence College women's tennis team opened the 2018 Fall season this past weekend at the Quinnipiac Invitational Tournament (Sept. 14-16) in Hamden, Conn. The Friars faced a tough weekend of competition with many talented teams from Army, Fairfield University, Sacred Heart University, Quinnipiac University, Boston University, Bryant University and the University of Connecticut.
The doubles matches proved to be too tough for the Friars with all four teams losing their first-round matches. However, the team came back the same day with some great play and managed to claim three victories in their first singles matches.
In the singles A draw, senior
Risa Takenaka (St. Charles, Mo.) managed to claim one of the best victories of her career, taking down a player from the University of Connecticut (UTR 9.35), 7-5, 6-1. Freshman
Mimi Dailey (Wellesley, Mass.) also claimed her first victory as a Friar, scoring a 6-3, 6-1 win over a player from Fairfield University in the singles D draw. Junior
Natalie Pitocco (West Warwick, R.I.) claimed her first round match with a win over a player from the University of Connecticut in the singles C draw.
The following day the Friars returned for more singles competition in which sophomore
Grace Goyette (Bedford, N.H.) claimed her first victory of the season with an 8-2 win over a player from Sacred Heart University.
The Friars return to action next Wednesday, September 26th, taking on Fairfield University.
