PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The Providence College track & field team competed at the 123rd running of the Penn Relays on Thursday, April 26. The Friars had athletes competing in the women's 3,000 meters, women's 5,000 meters and the men's 5,000 meters.

Graduate student Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) raced in the fastest heat of the women's 3,000 meters. Rocha took control of the race early and attempted to break the field by making it an honest pace. She would ultimately finish second overall in a time 9:19.72. Wheeler was not far behind, taking sixth overall with a time of 9:26.00.

Sophomore Liam Harris (Douglas, County Cork, Ireland) raced in the second section of the men's 5,000 meters. Harris ran a tactically smart race as he positioned himself in the back of the lead pack. Harris closed well when the move was made with 300 meters remaining and finished third in his heat with a new personal best time of 14:18.17.

Freshman Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) had a solid race in the top heat of the women's 5,000 meters. Coffin placed 11th in the heat in a personal best time of 16:44.40. The race was won by Millie Paladino, who is racing unattached this season, in a time of 16:08.15.

Providence's next race will be the Brown Springtime Invitational on Sunday, April 29.
