Indianapolis, Ind. - The Providence men's basketball team lost to Butler on Saturday afternoon, 69-54, in front of a sold out crowd (9,184) at Hinkle Field House.

Senior point guard Kyron Cartwright (Cartwright) made history at the 18:58 mark of the first half as a pass to Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) resulted in Cartwright's 600th career assist.

Cartwright is just the third player in Friar history to record 600 assists and now only sits behind Vincent Council'13 (725) and Ernie DiGregorio'73 (662) on the Friars all-time leaderboard.

Nine different Friars scored, with sophomore Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) leading the way with 11 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) also tallied 11 points.

Providence (17-10, 8-6) held a 35-33 lead at the half, but the Bulldogs came out and went on a quick 6-0 run capped of by a Kelan Martin basket to take a four-point edge.

The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 10, 47-37, on a Nate Folwer layup off a feed from Kamar Baldwin, but junior Isaiah Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.) answered back with a three pointer to pull the Friars within 47-40 with 11:18 to play.

Providence, however, started the second half just 3-of-24 from the field allowing the Bulldogs to remain at a distance.

A layup by Baldwin and a pair of jumpers from Paul Jorgenson increased the Bulldogs up to 55-42 with 8:30 to play.

The Bulldogs took their largest lead of the game, 57-43, with 7:17 to play on a Baldwin free throw but slowly the Friars started to climb back.

Diallo laid in a pass from Cartwright and a White three pointer trimmed the deficit to 57-49 with 3:44 left.

Two free throws from Rodney Bullock (Hampton, Va.) kept the Friars within eight, 59-51, with 2:15 to play, but a three-pointer from Martin on the Bulldogs ensuing possession put Butler back up 11 and sealed any hopes of a Friars comeback

The Friars trailed 9-7 early on, but a pair of Nate Watson (Arlington, Va.) layups circled around a Bullock three-pointer pushed Providence in front 15-9.

A Makai Ahston-Langford (Worcester, Mass.) three-pointer kept Providence in front by five at the under 12 media timeout, but a triple by Nate Fowler and a jumper from Jorgenson tied the score at 18 with 10:18 to play in the first half.

The score remained tied up at 27 with just over three minutes to play in the half, but White came off the bench and knocked down consecutive three-pointers to give the Friars a 33-30 lead.

A runner in the lane by Cartwright kept Providence in front, 35-33, at the half.

Next up the Friars host Seton Hall at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Wednesday, February 21 with tipoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on FSN/COX YurView/YES Network.
