Providence College Ranks 57th In Learfield Directors' Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College is currently ranked 57th in the 2016-17 Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, released April 13. The Friars have recorded a total of 247.00 points in the standings, which includes 186.00 points for their fall sports finish and 61 points through three of five updates for winter sports.
During the fall, the Providence College men’s soccer team earned 73 points, by virtue of its impressive run in the NCAA Tournament. The Friars advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second time in the last three seasons. The run included a 5-4 victory over the top-ranked and top-seeded Maryland during the NCAA Second Round on Nov. 20. In that match, Providence rallied from a 4-1 deficit, scoring four goals in a 13-minute span to defeat the Terps in College Park, Md.
The Friars’ women’s cross country team picked up 63 points in the standings by virtue of its 13th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind. The men’s cross country team collected 50 points for its 24th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
To start off the winter sports scoring, freshman Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) and junior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) led the Friars at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track Championships, earning valuable points at the championship that also translate into Learfield Directors’ Cup points. Paladino finished seventh at the NCAA Championships in the mile (4:34.62), while Ilarda placed seventh in the 5,000 meters (15:46.13). Both athletes earned First-Team All-America honors for their individual performances.
The Providence College men’s basketball team finished the 2016-17 campaign with a 20-13 overall record, including a 10-8 mark in the BIG EAST Conference, and earned an at-large berth to the squad’s fourth-consecutive NCAA Tournament. It marked the first time ever the Friars had advanced to four-straight NCAA Tournaments. The Friars also have registered four-consecutive 20+ win seasons for the first time since 1975-78. Providence earned five points in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings for its appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The Providence men’s ice hockey team earned the College 25 points in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings. The Friars were awarded an at-large bid to their fourth-consecutive NCAA Tournament, and finished the year with a 22-12-5 record, including a 12-7-3 mark in Hockey East. For Providence, its four-straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament mark the longest stretch of consecutive appearances in program history. The Friars captured their first-ever National Championship in 2015.
Providence is ranked second in the Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings among Division I non-FBS/FCS institutions (247.00 points), sitting just behind Denver, who ranks 34th (381.00 points). The Friars rank first among BIG EAST Conference institutions, ahead of Georgetown (63rd), Creighton (67th), Villanova (68th) and Butler (89th), who have all cracked the top-100
Last year, Providence College finished 105th in the Learfield Directors’ Cup final standings.
The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in NCAA Championships. The Directors’ Cup Committee is reviewing the scoring structure for 2016-17 which will be finalized prior to the winter sports standings.
