PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior forward Rodney Bullock (Hampton, Va.) narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead the Providence College men's basketball team to a 76-70 victory against Georgetown in a Big East Conference contest at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Wednesday night. The¬ win was the fifth straight for Providence against Georgetown and sixth victory in the last seven matchups. The Friars also improved to 10-0 at home this season.
Junior guard Jalen Lindsey (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) paced Providence College (11-5, 1-2 Big East) with 19 points and four rebounds while junior guard Kyron Cartwright (Compton, Calif.) had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Friars. Junior Emmitt Holt (Webster, N.Y.) was also in double figures with 17 points and five boards in the victory.
Georgetown (8-7, 0-3 Big East) was led by sophomore forward Marcus Derrickson with 26 points and six rebounds while junior forward Akoy Agau recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Hoyas. Graduate student guard Rodney Pryor was also in double figures with 16 points in the setback.
Providence raced out to the early lead and took the 11-5 advantage on a three-pointer by freshman guard Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) with 15:44 left in the stanza. Georgetown responded, however and went on a 10-2 run to take the 15-13 advantage on a layup by freshman guard Jagan Mosley with 8:38 remaining in the half. Georgetown had the 23-22 lead late in the half before the Friars closed on an 8-0 run, capped by a jumper from Cartwright as time expired to take the 30-23 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime. PC held Georgetown to just 31.3 percent (10-of-32) from the field in the first half and out rebounded the Hoyas by a 25-18 margin in the stanza.
Georgetown opened the second half on a 14-4 run and took the 37-34 lead on a three-pointer by Derrickson with 15:48 left in the contest. Providence regained the 39-37 lead on a three-pointer by Lindsey with 14:36 on the clock. The two teams then battled back and forth with Providence leading 56-54 on a jumper from freshman guard Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) with 8:04 remaining in the contest. The Friars then went on a 9-3 run, forcing Georgetown to take a timeout after a jumper by Cartwright made the score 65-57 with 4:23 left on the clock. The Friars then held on for the 76-70 victory.
For the game, PC shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field, 40.0 percent (6-for-15) from behind the three-point stripe and 73.3 percent (22-of-30) from the free throw line. Georgetown shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the field, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from three-point land and 50.0 percent (8-for-16) from the free throw line.
In upcoming action, Providence College will host 10th ranked Creighton in a Big East Conference contest at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Saturday, January 7th at 2:00 p.m.
