PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Friars were defeated by the St. John's Red Storm, 91-86, in BIG EAST men's basketball action on Wednesday, January 25 in Providence, R.I. Rodney Bullock was one of four Friars in double figures as he led the team with 20 points.
St. John's rode hot shooting from its back court to jump out to a 46-37 lead after 20 minutes of action. The Red Storm shot 18-36 overall, including 8-16 from three-point territory. SJU guard Marcus Lovett led all in the first half with 16 points. Bullock led the Friars with 10 points and six rebounds. The Friars shot the ball well as they were 14-23 from the field (3-7 from three), but were plagued by turnovers as they committed 10.
Providence came out with intensity in the second half, opening on a 14-5 run and knotting the score at 51 on a jumper by Bullock. The Friars regained the lead when Emmitt Holt made a layup with 15:15 left in game to put the Friars up 53-51. The game went back and forth and featured 15 lead changes. St. John's held a one-point lead (87-86) with 14 seconds left and the Friars had the ball. However, Kyron Cartwright's shot was blocked and St. John's recovered the ball and hit their free throws on successive possessions to earn the win.
In addition to Bullock's 20 points, freshman Alpha Diallo had a career-high 18 points, Cartwright added 16 points and Jalen Lindsey chipped in with 13 points.
Lovett had a game-high 26 points for St. John's.
Providence shot 62 percent (31-50) for the game, including 40 percent from three-point territory (6-15). St. John's finished 32-61 (53%) from the field overall and 10-21 (48%) from beyond the arc. The Friars will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Marquette at 2 p.m. on FSN.
