Providence College is currently ranked 77th in the most recent Learfield Directors' Cup standings, which were release on April 14. To date, the Friars have accumulated 168.50 points. Providence College also ranks second among NCAA Division I non-FBS/FCS (non-football) institutions and third among BIG EAST Conference members.

During the fall, Providence College earned 80 points by virtue of the women's cross country team's impressive fourth-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Championships. It marked the program's third podium finish at the NCAA Championships in the last four years. The team was led by senior Sarah Collins (Basel, Switzerland) and junior Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.), who each earned All-America honors.

The Friars received an additional 13.5 points for men's indoor track. On March 12, senior All-American Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) placed seventh in the mile at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track Championships.

The men's basketball team earned the College 50 points, as the program earned a berth to the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship for the third-consecutive season, and was awarded a No. 9 seed. The Friars defeated No. 8 seed USC, 70-69, on a last-second lay-up by Rodney Bullock (Hampton, Va.) in the First Round on March 17 in Raleigh, N.C. The Friars advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Championship, falling to top-seeded North Carolina, 85-66, on March 19.

In the most recent Director's Cup update, the men's ice hockey program picked up 25 points. The Friars earned the top-seed in the NCAA Northeast Regional, and faced Minnesota Duluth in the first round on March 25 in Worcester, Mass. In what proved to be the longest NCAA Northeast Regional game all-time, the Friars were defeated by the Bulldogs, 2-1, in double overtime. The Friars concluded their season with a 27-7-4 record. The 27 victories the second-most wins in program history. The Friars also earned a share of their first-ever Hockey East regular-season title.

Providence is currently ranked second among NCAA non-FBS/FCS institutions, with Denver currently sitting in 48th place (290 points.). Georgetown leads the BIG EAST Conference in 53rd place (279.50), followed by Villanova in 56th place (262.00).

The Learfield Directors' Cup is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men's and women's. Began in 1993-94 for Division I by NACDA and USA Today, it was expanded in 1995-96 to include Division II, III and the NAIA and, in 2011-12, expanded to the Junior/Community Colleges. Each institution is awarded points in a pre-determined number of sports for men and women during the fall, winter and spring sports campaigns.

Last year, the Friars finished 54th in the final Learfield Directors' Cup Standings. Their 54th-place finish marks the highest final ranking under the direction of Associate Vice President/Athletics Director Bob Driscoll, and the College's second-highest finish all-time since the Director's Cup was founded in 1993-94. Providence's top finish in the Directors' Cup was 44th in 1993-94.
