PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's hockey team was defeated by UConn, 3-1. Two first period goals pushed the Huskies ahead of the Friars, despite being outshot. The Friars moved to 9-20-1 (5-14-1 WHEA) and UConn improved to 12-13-5 (8-9-3 WHEA).
Sarah Bryant (Bethlehem, Pa.) started in net for the Friars and posted 17 saves on the game.
UConn's Rebecca Lindblad started off the scoring less than three minutes into the first period. Justine Fredette notched the second Huskie goal at 16:53, to give UConn a 2-0 lead to close the first period.
Providence responded midway through the second period with a power play goal from Christina Putigna (Grimsby, Ont.). Putigna collected the puck along the back door off a rebound and wristed it into the back of the net. Putigna's shot hit the back bar and bounced out of the net. Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) and Cassidy MacPherson (Oakville, Ontario) added assists on the goal.
With 1:30 remaining the Friars pulled Bryant for the extra attacker and Leah Lum scored an empty net goal to extend the UConn lead to 3-1.
The Friars outshot the Huskies 30 to 19.
Providence killed its five penalties and went one-for-four on the power play.
The Friars are back in action on Feb. 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Merrimack.
