Providence College Athletics Ranked 10th in Learfield Directors' Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College moved up five spots to 10th place in the most recent Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, released on Dec. 15. Providence College was previously ranked 15th in the organization’s first release on Dec. 1.
The Providence College men’s soccer team was awarded 73 points in the most recent standings, by virtue of its impressive run in the NCAA Tournament. The Friars advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second time in the last three seasons. The run included a 5-4 victory over top-ranked and top-seeded Maryland during the NCAA Second Round on Nov. 20. In that match, Providence rallied from a 4-1 deficit, scoring four goals in a 13-minute span to defeat the Terps in College Park, Md.
Earlier this fall, the Friars’ women’s cross country team picked up 63 points in the standings by virtue of its 13th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind. The men’s cross country team was awarded 50 points for its 24th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Providence is ranked first among Division I non-FBS/FCS institutions and first among BIG EAST Conference members.
The final fall standings will be released on Jan. 14, with the completion of the FBS and FCS football championships and bowls. Prior to Jan. 14, one additional update will be made in the standings to include points for women’s volleyball.
Last year, Providence College finished 105th in the Learfield Directors’ Cup final standings.
The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in NCAA Championships. The Directors’ Cup Committee is reviewing the scoring structure for 2016-17 which will be finalized prior to the winter sports standings.
