PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence men's basketball team defeated the University of Massachusetts, 75-69 in an exciting contest on Saturday, December 10 in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 8-2 on the season and 7-0 at home. Junior Rodney Bullock (Hampton, Va.) recorded a double-double on 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Friars to victory.
Kyron Cartwright (Compton, Calif.) put the Friars on the board in the fourth minute when he netted a jump shot outside the paint. Emmitt Holt (Webster, N.Y.) put the Friars within striking distance of the Minutemen in the opening frame connecting from beyond the three point arc to close the deficit to one point in the 11th minute, (17-16). The teams traded baskets for the lead in the closing of the first, the Friars held the lead heading into the locker room (29-28). Bullock had eight points and six points to lead PC in the first half. Donte Clark had eight points for UMass.
The Friars opened the second frame scoring 10 points by Bullock and Holt to build a 39-32 lead. Jalen Lindsey (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) lifted the Friars to a 16 point lead with 9:26 remaining in the game after netting back-to-back three point shots. The Minutemen chased the Friars closing the gap to 66-63 with two minutes remaining. However, UMass was not able to get any closer as Holt hit a pair of free throws before a defensive stance by PC and another Holt layup and the Friars were up by seven points (70-63). UMass did not get closer than five the rest of the way as PC earned the six-point win.
The Friars shot 43.9% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc for the game. The Friars outrebounded UMass, 40-38.
Bullock recorded his second double-double of the season and was 10-12 from the free throw line and 2-3 from three point territory. Holt netted 18 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Rashan Holloway had a team high 21 points and nine rebounds for UMass. Luwane Pipkins added 20 points for the Minutemen.
Up next, Providence will host Wagner University on Saturday, December 17 at 12:00 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
