Providence College Ranked 15th In Learfield Directors' Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College is ranked 15th in the Learfield Directors’ Cup. The first set of fall sports rankings were released in a combined effort by NACDA and Learfield on Dec. 1 and the Friars accumulated 113 points. The Friars’ women’s cross country team picked up 63 points by virtue of its 13th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind. The men’s cross country team was awarded 50 points for its 24th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Providence is ranked second among Division I non-FBS/FCS institutions. Portland is ranked first, just two points ahead of Providence, with 115 points. Providence is ranked first among BIG EAST Conference members in the first set of Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings. Georgetown currently ranks 24th (83 points), while Villanova is third among BIG EAST members in 50th (53 points).
On Dec. 15, the second installment of fall standings for the Learfield Directors’ Cup will be released, and will include points for men’s and women’s soccer and men’s water polo. The Providence College men’s soccer team is currently enjoying an impressive run in the NCAA Tournament, having advanced to the Quarterfinal Round against North Carolina. The Friars and Tar Heels are scheduled to play on Friday, Dec. 2 in Chapel Hill, N.C. at 7:00 p.m.
Last year, Providence College finished 105th in the Learfield Directors’ Cup final standings.
The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in NCAA Championships. The Directors’ Cup Committee is reviewing the scoring structure for 2016-17 which will be finalized prior to the winter sports standings.
