PROVIDENCE, R.I. - On the back of Providence College's first men's hockey national championship and second-consecutive appearance in the men's basketball NCAA tournament, Providence College Athletics is pleased to announce that the department generated a record $2,900,000 in ticket revenue for the 2015 fiscal year. This revenue is a crucial part of the funding for all of the Friar athletic programs.
This follows the previously announced record year for donations, in which the Providence College athletic department raised $6,060,000 in the 2015 fiscal year thanks to the support of 3,134 generous donors. Under the leadership of President Rev. Brian Shanley, O.P. and Athletics Director Bob Driscoll, athletic fundraising has set a record each year and has grown from $200,000 to more than $6,000,000 in annual donations.
The Friar athletic teams have had one of the most successful two-year runs in the history of the College, capturing an NCAA title in each of the last two years. In November 2013, the women's cross country team won the NCAA Championship and in March, the men's hockey team captured its first NCAA title. Additionally during the 2014-15 season, the men's basketball team was ranked in the top 25 for the first time since 2004. The men's basketball team had several sold out home games and multiple games with more than 10,000 fans at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
"We are grateful to all our alumni, and fans, who helped us reach an all-time high in ticket sales," Providence College Senior Associate Athletic Director Steve Napolillo said. "Their generosity and support helped us to a second-consecutive NCAA tournament appearance in men's basketball, and to win a national championship in men's ice hockey. The revenue raised helps us retain high-level coaches, and give our student athletes the best experience in the class room and on the field of play. We look forward to reaching a new record this year."
"I want to thank everyone who rallied around our program and helped us bring a national championship home to Providence," Providence College Men's Ice Hockey Coach Nate Leaman stated. "We were the smallest school in the NCAA Tournament this year but we had the biggest team. As a donor and season ticket holder, you are a crucial part of our team and we proved this year that when we come together, nothing can stand in our way."
Season tickets are now on sale in both men's basketball and men's hockey for the 2015-16 season, and can be purchased via our online box office at Friars.com/tickets, over the phone at 401-865-4672, or in person at the Schneider Arena ticket office.
