BOSTON, Mass. - Providence College men's hockey junior goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) was named to the CCM All-America Second Team (East). The All-America teams were announced by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) on Friday, April 10 at Matthews Arena.
Gillies earned All-America honors for the second time in his career as a Friar, as he also was named Second Team All-American (East) in 2012-13. He is the fifth Friar to earn two All-American honors.
Gillies is the 17th player in program history to earn All-America accolades, and the third Friar goalie to be named an All-American, joining Chris Terreri (First Team 1985 and Second Team in 1986) and Nolan Schaefer (Second Team in 2001).
This season, Gillies went 23-13-2 on the year and has posted the second-best goals-against average in program history at 1.98. He currently is tied for seventh in the nation in save percentage at .930, while his goals-against average ranks ninth. Gillies has made 980 saves on the season, which currently ranks sixth all-time at Providence. In 38 starts this year, he has allowed two or fewer goals 29 times.
In the Hockey East, Gillies was recently selected to the Hockey East First Team. He also earned that honor in 2012-13, and became just the fifth goaltender in Hockey East history to earn multiple First-Team honors.
During the regular-season conference schedule, Gillies posted the sixth-best goals-against average (1.74) and the fifth-best save percentage (.939) in league history. He has posted four shutouts this season, including a 43-save effort in Providence's 1-0 win against Boston College (Nov. 29).
Gillies has earned two Hockey East Defensive Player of the Month awards and three Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.
Gillies is Providence's all-time leader in shutouts (13) and career goals-against average (2.07). He owns three of the top-four lowest single-season goals-against averages in Friar history (2.07, 2.16 and 1.95). This season, Gillies moved into second place in career wins at Providence College (59). He ranks second at Providence in career saves (2,951) and fourth in goaltender appearances (104).
In 14 career playoff games, Gillies has a 1.98 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage.
In the NCAA tournament this year, Gillies made 52 total saves in the East Regionals to earn him All-East Regional Team honors. Gillies helped Providence clinch a spot in the Frozen Four Championship Game after a 25-save performance during the Friars' 4-1 win over Omaha in the national semifinal (April 9).
Gillies looks to add to his numbers when Friars take the ice against Boston University for the National Championship on Saturday, April 11. The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass., and will be televised live on ESPN.
