No Days Off - Friars Looking to Finish Strong

Feb. 26, 2015

The end of February in Friartown has been an exciting time the last few years. With the resurgence of the Men's Basketball and Hockey teams, the mountains of snow that have piled up around the city are not the only things that are looking like they are going to stick around until the end of March. And with that, our office is in full swing getting ready for our final games in each sport, and prepping for the various post season possibilities.

Last season, the basketball team's remarkable run was embodied by the phrase `Heart and Soul', which represented the passion that the team brought to the court while fighting the odds to win a Big East Championship and secure and NCAA bid. We were amazed how this rallying cry was adopted by Friar Fans everywhere, and this sense of collective unity was a big driver in helping the team to defy expectations on a national stage. While the result on the court was the end product, the support the nation saw from Friartown in Providence, New York, San Antonio, and all over the country, showed that our title wasn't a fluke, and that Providence College was going to be a force to deal with for a long time to come.

Earlier in the season, Coach Cooley said that the `Heart and Soul' mantra belongs to last year's team. That this team is a new group of kids, with an attitude and culture all their own. He also consistently talks about how us being in the crosshairs of our opponents means we need to work harder than ever to make sure we stay at the top of the Big East, and move closer to our goal of a National Championship. Our staff and our team are embodying this philosophy with the mantra `No Days Off', because if we hesitate for a second, there are plenty of other teams who would love to knock us off our perch.

With two home games left this season for basketball, the Big East tournament and then an increasingly likely NCAA berth still remaining, we are no longer the scrappy underdogs of last season. Being the title holders, and flirting with the top 25 all season, teams have been coming at us all year, regardless of if they are Villanova or Marquette. Beating the Friars means something to these teams, and if we overlook anyone on the schedule, as we've seen a couple times so far, it will come back to bite us.

With that in mind, we need everyone in Friartown to join us in our push to make some noise this March. This mission starts March 1 against Marquette at 3:30PM at the Dunk, continues March 7 against Butler, and goes all the way through the Big East and NCAA tournaments. Everyone in our community is a part of this, so let's rally the troops to pack the Dunk for our final games, and make sure we're heading in to the postseason on a high note! Go Friars!
