WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Providence College sophomore defenseman Jake Walman (Toronto, Ontario) was named Warrior Hockey East Player of the Week in an announcement made by the league office on Monday (Nov. 2).
The sophomore is the second Friar to earn Hockey East Player of the Week honors this season, as teammate Trevor Mingoia earned the accolade after his opening weekend performance at Miami. Walman's hat trick led the Friars to a 7-2 triumph over Colgate on Friday night, while his goal and assist on Saturday night helped Providence earn the sweep over the Raiders in Hamilton, N.Y. The hat trick was the first for a Providence defenseman since Rob Gaudreau netted three against Brown on Dec. 2, 1991.
Walman has been lighting up the scoresheet from the Friars' blue line this season, leading the team with 12 points on seven goals and five assists. The seven goals are tied for national lead with UMass' Dennis Kravchenko, while his 12 points are good for a tie for second nationally. He is the only defenseman in the top-20 in scoring and his +9 rating is tied for the best in the nation alongside of teammate Mark Jankowski.
Walman and the rest of the Friars will be off this upcoming weekend before preparing for a home-and-home set against Boston University on Nov. 13-14.
