PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College men's basketball defeated Creighton, 65-53, to open BIG EAST Conference play on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Friars improved to 11-3 (1-0 BIG EAST), while the Bluejays moved to 9-5 (0-1 BIG EAST). Its marks the first time the Friars won their BIG EAST opener since they defeated St. John's (75-54) on Dec. 31, 2008.

The Friars were led by senior forward LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.), who scored a game-high 35 points including three 3-pointers. He also added eight rebounds. Henton was followed by freshman guard Jalen Lindsey (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) with eight points. Sophomore Kris Dunn (New London, Conn.) registered 12 assists, eight rebounds and six points.

The first half ended with Providence leading, 32-28. The Friars' largest lead in the first half was 10 points, which came with 14:04 left and PC held a 14-4 lead. Henton led all in the first half, scoring 17 points and grabbing three boards. He was followed by Lindsey who scored five points.

The Friars came out strong in the second half as they opened on a 10-2 run and built a 12-point lead (40-28) in the first 3:14. PC continued to dominate the second half and maintained the lead which never got below five points. The Friars' lead grew to a game-high 17 points with 8:34 left in the second half after holding the Bluejays scoreless, while Providence scored 12 points in a four minute span, with five of the points coming from Henton.

Providence held the advantage in rebounds (34-32), as well as points the paint (36-29). The Friars also outscored the Bluejays in the fast break points (16-3). The Friars shot 44 percent from the field going 24-of-54, while Creighton shot 36 percent going 19-of-53.

Creighton was led by junior Geoffrey Groselle and Austin Chatman with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

The Friars will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 3 when they play their first conference road game of the season at Marquette at 2:00 p.m. on Fox Sports Net.
