Women's Tennis Dominates Sacred Heart, 6-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team defeated Sacred Heart University, 6-1, on March 24 at the SHU Tennis Courts in Fairfield, Conn. The Friars swept doubles play and won five-of-six singles matches on their way to victory.

Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) won a thrilling match at No. 1 singles against Gabi Kaldan, 7-5, 5-7, 10-1. Sacred Heart's Kate Donnelly earned the Pioneers' only point of the day at No. 2 singles with a, 6-4, 6-2, victory over Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic).

At No. 3 singles, Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) defeated Kristina Chao, 6-2, 6-0. Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) followed with a, 6-3, 6-2, win over Delaney Downing in the No. 4 spot. Taylor Ahlborn (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Alli Carnall (Hatfield, Mass.) rounded out singles play with wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Ahlborn defeated Kristin Legenza, 6-2, 6-2, while Carnall earned a, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Maggie Tooley.

In doubles play, Aviles-Duron and Bernardez dominated the No. 1 spot against Donnelly and Chao, 8-2. Corder and Ahlborn teamed up at No. 2 for an 8-5 win over Kaldan and Downing. Ramirez and Carnall wrapped up play at No. 3 with an 8-2 victory over Legenza and Haley Dubits.

The Friars return to action on March 31 against Siena in Providence, R.I.
