Narragansett, R.I. -

The Providence College swimming and diving team, along with Head Coach John O'Neill and his wife Cindy, again joined with hundreds of swimmers from the local community at Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narragansett, R.I. last Saturday morning to swim in the Second Annual Swim Across America event.

Over 170 swimmers completed the one-mile open-water course including several Friar coaches, alums and student-athletes. The event also featured Providence graduate and 1948 Olympic Team member Clara Walker, who swam the half-mile open-water course. Walker, recognized as one of the most decorated masters swimmer in history and inductee into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, was the oldest participant in the event.

The Friar's immense effort in this cause so far this year has heralded them as the top team fundraiser in the event. To date, the Friar family has raised over $11,000 for the event's beneficiary, the Oncology Center at Rhode Island's Women and Infant's Hospital.
