Women's Tennis Splits Against Villanova & Seton Hall

The Providence College women's tennis team went 1-1 over the weekend. On Sunday, April 17, the team earned its first BIG EAST victory of the season by defeating Villanova, 4-2, at the Centre Court Tennis Club in East Providence, R.I.On Saturday, April 16, the Friars fell to Seton Hall, 5-2, at the Providence College Tennis Courts. With the split, the Friars finish the regular season at 5-14 overall and 1-7 in the BIG EAST. Villanova fell to 4-14 (0-5 BIG EAST), while Seton Hall improved to 6-15 (3-8 BIG EAST).
On Saturday, April 16, sophomore Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) scored both points for the Friars, as they both earned straight-set singles wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. In doubles action, Seton Hall won all three matches in tight fashion.
On Sunday, April 17, the Friars got singles wins from Aviles-Duron, Bernardez, Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) and Melissa Ferry (Cumberland, R.I.). Bernardez easily handled her No. 2 opponent, 6-3, 6-1. The Friars then were down 2-1, after having dropped the No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches. Aviles-Duron was down a set and 3-1 before she stormed back for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Villanova's Mikelle Mancini. Aviles-Duron ran off five games in the third set to take the crucial point. Sinha pulled off a similar comeback for the Friars, as she took the last four games of the No. 3 singles third set to win 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Sinha's win marked the first BIG EAST singles victory for the senior captain. Ferry clinched the victory for the Friars as she won 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
Doubles matches were not contested against Villanova.
Aviles and Bernardez are each 8-1 in their last nine singles matches. Aviles finished her sophomore season with 19 wins at No. 1 singles, a school record. Aviles now has 36 No. 1 singles victories in her two-year career. The victory against Villanova marked the first BIG EAST win for the Friars since April 13, 2002, when the team beat St. John's, 4-3.
