Swimming & Diving Announces 2010-11 Award Winners

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams announced their 2010-11 award winners during their 27th annual end-of-the-year banquet on Sunday, April 17.
The Cindi Luciani Award was given to senior Courtney Larcom (Morristown, N.J.) Named for Cindi Luciani '91, this award honors the women's Most Valuable Student-Athlete in dual and championship meet competition, as voted by team members and coaching staff. Larcom provided great leadership as a co-captain while also putting the finishing touches on one of the best careers ever by a Friar. Having missed much of her junior year due to illness, she capped off her outstanding career with lifetime-best swims at the BIG EAST Championships and graduates as the school record holder in the 1650 yard and 1500 meter Freestyles.
Sophomore Eric Burtchell (Pawtucket, R.I.) was honored with the Horace Bowden Award. Named for Horace Bowden '89, this award honors the men's Most Valuable Student-Athlete in dual and championship meet competition, as voted by the team members and coaching staff. Burtchell had a standout season as a mainstay in the middle distance and distance freestyle events for the Friars. In addition, he made BIG EAST qualifying cuts in the 200 individual medley and backstroke events for the Friars. The team's leading scorer, Burtchell also competed on freestyle relays at the BIG EAST Championships.
Freshmen Kelly Hall (Morristown, N.J.) and Andrew St. Pierre (Fairhaven, Mass.) received the O'Neill Family Award. Created in 2008, the O'Neill Family Award honors the most valuable female and male freshmen athletes in dual and championship meet competition, as voted by the team members and coaching staff. Hall led the Friars outstanding freshmen class in scoring, qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in three individual events (200 & 400 IM, 200 breaststroke) and also competed in the medley relays. St. Pierre showed tremendous versatility during the year, swimming both IM and breaststroke while leading his class in total scoring. He competed in those events at the BIG EAST Championships as well as the on the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Both Hall and St. Pierre recorded times which place them among the Friar's top ten all-time in their events.
Sophomore Nicole Monanian (Manahawkin, N.J.) and junior Jordan Rivera (Rockville, Md.) were recognized as the Most Improved Female Athlete and Most Improved Male Athlete, respectively. This award honors the student-athlete who has improved the most in his and her specialty events, as voted by team members and coaching staff. Monanian had an outstanding year, particularly in the biggest meets of the year. In December, at Harold Anderson Invitational, she had outstanding drops in the 500 free and 100/200 breaststroke and then continued to improve with outstanding swims at the BIG EAST Championships in those events. Her 100 breaststroke time now stands as 3rd all-time for the Friars. Rivera was recognized for his consistency this season having now fully recovered from a major injury in his freshman year to qualify for and compete at the BIG EAST Championship as a junior in the breaststroke events.
Sophomore Allie Black (Mystic, Conn.) was honored with the Sears Diving Award. Named for Patrick Sears '88 and Kevin Sears '93, this award honors the diver who, selected by the coaching staff, makes an outstanding contribution to the sport of diving at Providence College. Black led a talented diving group, setting a school record for 1 meter (6 dives) and qualifying and competing at the NCAA Zone diving Championship finishing 39th on the 1 meter board. Seniors
Alexis Fatigati (New Milford, N.J.) and Brian Silva (Seekonk, Mass.) were both given the David Hardy Coach's Award. Named for David Hardy '89, this award honors the male and female student-athletes who exhibit those qualities which Hardy brought to the Providence Swimming and Diving teams: loyalty, dedication, good sportsmanship and outstanding effort, both academically and athletically. Fatigati capped off her outstanding career serving as one of the team's co-captains while also racking up a career total of 589.50 points to finish 7th on the all-time scoring list. Silva, overcoming injury and illness during his first three years, completed his best season at PC leading the Friars, swimming the sprint freestyle events while serving as the Friar's team captain.
In addition to the award announcements, Head Coach John O'Neill announced that Sarah Riley (Berwyn, Pa.), Erica Devine (Attleboro, Mass.) and Caroline Caliri (Marblehead, Mass.) will captain the 2011-12 women's squad while Collin Casciano (Hewitt, N.J.) and Stephen Zapf (Freehold, N.J.) will captain the men.
