The 2011 BIG EAST men’s basketball tournament will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 8-12. I have been in the sports industry for virtually my entire adult life and I can honestly say that this is one of the most exciting events in sports. This year’s tournament should be filled with fireworks, as the majority of the league is slated to make the NCAA Tournament field of 68. I look forward to seeing our Friar Fanatics out in full force when our men play on Tuesday.

As part of this year’s BIG EAST Tournament, Providence College will hold its annual WEEI Coach’s Show at P.J. Clark’s in New York City on Monday, March 7 from 6 p.m. to 10 pm. Each year this great Friar tradition serves as the unofficial pep rally for our men’s basketball team. The event is made possible by trustee Tom Boyan. My sincere thanks go out to Mr. Boyan for his generosity and commitment to the College.

In other good news, I am proud to announce that 51 percent of our student-athletes at PC posted a 3.0+ grade point average for the fall 2010 semester. Eighteen percent of our student-athletes made Dean’s List (3.55 GPA or better). Congratulations to our student-athletes for your continued hard work. I promise it will pay dividends in the future.

In our latest Vision Team meeting, the athletic department received a $500,000 gift from Trustee and Co-Chair of the Committee, Tom Keegan. Also during the meeting, our resident architect, Jim Dietzer, discussed design concepts and sought input from fellow vision team members for Alumni Hall and Mullaney Gymnasium. With Mr. Keegan’s selfless gift, along with the College’s own $1 million commitment, we are well on our way.
