PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team completed its matches against Bryant University on Tuesday, October 11. The Friars fell to the Bulldogs, 5-2. The matches, originally scheduled for September 25, were moved to October 4 because of poor weather. Both teams agreed to start with the singles matches on that day, but matches were delayed again after rain showers forced a suspension of play, with the Bulldogs leading, 3-1. On October 11, the two teams finally completed play.
Junior Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and sophomore Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) earned the Friars their two points with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Aviles-Duron came back to defeat Claudia Hidalgo after dropping the first set (6-7 (3)). She won the second set, 6-3, and the third set, 7-5. Bernardez won her match easily, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, over Lucy Bird. Freshman Taylor Ahlborn (Minneapolis, Minn.) was the only to take a match to three sets, as she fell to Stephanie Smyers at No. 5 (4-6, 7-5, 6-3).
The Bulldogs swept the remaining matches and also took two of three doubles matches to take the 5-2 victory. Aviles-Duron and Bernardez teamed up to take a win at No. 1 doubles against Hidalgo and Bird, 8-2, but the Friars couldn't muster a second victory in the doubles competition.
