POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Providence College women's tennis team enjoyed a successful weekend at the Marist Invitational in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The squad brought home titles in three singles brackets and two doubles draws.
Junior Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and sophomore Maria Clara Bernardez(Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) advanced to the championship match of Flight A Singles. The duo each earned a bye in the opening round of play. Aviles-Duron defeated Livia Gherman of Albany (6-3, 6-2) in the quarterfinals. She went on to defeat Abby Liu of Hartford (4-6, 6-4 (10-8)) in the semifinals. Bernardez easily put away Carly Holloway of Siena, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals, before taking down Erin McCarthy of Marist in the semifinals (6-4, 3-6 (10-4)).
Providence also took control of the Flight B Singles on both sides of the draw as freshmen Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Taylor Corder(Corinth, Miss.) each advanced to the championship match. Both players earned byes in the opening round and started play in the quarterfinals. Corder defeated Katina Zampas of Hartford in a hard fought match, 4-6, 7-5 (10-7). She advanced to the title match with a victory over Marielle Campbell of Marist (6-3, 3-6 (10-3)). Ramirez made her way through the bracket with a quarterfinal win over Kirsten Scott of Albany (6-3, 6-4), and defeated Sabrina Tahir of Marist (7-5, 6-2).
In Flight C Singles, freshman Caitlin Foley (Holden, Mass.) advanced to the championship match, while fellow classmate Taylor Ahlborn(Minneapolis, Minn.) bowed out in the semifinals. Ahlborn started with an opening round victory over Danielle Crill of Siena (6-4, 6-1). In the quarterfinals, she defeated Ivana Grbelja of Saint Peter's, 6-0, 6-1. Ahlborn was defeated in the semis by eventual Flight C champion, Kirsten Ackerman, of Marist (6-4, 5-7, (10-6)). Foley rolled in the opening with a, 6-1, 6-1, win over Siena's Nicole Ross. She then dismissed Elora Benfer (6-3, 6-0) in the quarterfinals. Foley then posted a, 6-2, 6-3, victory over Marist's Kayla O'Donovan before falling to Ackerman in the title match, 6-0, 6-2.
Providence continued its dominance in singles play as freshmen Ali Carnal (Hatfield, Mass.) and Elisabetta Dewitt(Boulder, Colo.) each made their way to the title match of Flight D Singles. Both players earned byes in the opening round. Carnal won her quarterfinal match over Cassie Brazz of Siena (6-2, 6-4) and handled Tessa Lewis of Marist in the semifinals (6-4, 6-0). Dewitt lost just one game in her two matches as she breezed through her side of the bracket. She defeated Christie Greenberg of Hartford (6-1, 6-0) in the quarterfinals, and Rachel Drake of Albany in the semifinal round (6-0, 6-0).
In doubles action, Aviles-Duron and Bernardez teamed up to win the Flight A Doubles title, while Corder and Ramirez were one point shy of making it an all-Friar final. Dewitt and Carnal took home the Flight C Doubles crown. In Flight B Doubles, Foley and Alhborn were ousted in the semifinals.
Aviles-Duron and Bernardez defeated Albany's Gherman and Kukkonen, 8-0, in the semifinals. The duo showed their resilience in the championship match, defeating McCarthy and Sun of Marist, 8-6. Corder and Ramirez defeated Sandhy and Rose of Siena, 8-3, in the quarterfinals of the Flight A Doubles, but fell to McCarthy and Sun of Marist, 9-8 (8-6), in the semis.
Dewitt and Carnal's trip through the bracket took three matches, defeating Greenberg and Willhoft of Hartford, 8-1, in quarterfinal action. In the semifinals, Dewitt and Carnal beat Benfer and Filip of Siena, 8-6. They went on to earn an 8-2 victory over Scott and Drake of Albany in the championship match.
Foley and Alhborn defeated Tahir and Campbell of Marist, 8-6, in the semifinal round. The duo fell to Brook and Iannone of Albany, 8-6.
