The Providence College women's tennis team posted individual results over the weekend at the ITA Eastern Championships. The event, which featured over 20 schools from all over the northeast region, was hosted by Army.
Sophomore Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) played tremendously in the "A" Singles tournament draw. Aviles-Duron notched hard-fought, consecutive wins against St. John's (6-2, 7-5), Rhode Island (6-4, 7-5) and Farleigh Dickinson (6-2, 4-6, 10-8) before losing to the eventual champion, Hofstra's Elena Ivanova (6-3, 6-3), in the semifinals. The semifinal appearance is a first for the underclassman. Last year, Aviles-Duron reached the quarterfinals before falling to Cornell. She now holds a 4-2 singles record on the year.
In "B" Singles, freshman Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) dropped a tough tiebreak decision in her opening round match to Connecticut's Alexa Gregory (1-6, 6-3, 10-5). Senior Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) was beaten twice in the "C" Singles tournament draw before pulling out of her third match.
The Friar tandem of senior Courtney Fuller (Newtown, Conn.) and freshman Christina Troy (LaGrange, Ill.) was defeated by Pittsburgh (8-3) in the opening round of the "B" Doubles tournament.
The Friars are back on the courts on Tuesday, September 28, as they travel to Kingston, R.I. to take on the Rams of Rhode Island.
