Women's Tennis Signs Maria Clara Bernardez

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

Head Coach Kyle LaBranche announced on Wednesday, May 5 that Maria Clara Bernardez has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence and play tennis for the Friars. Maria will be coming to PC this fall from her hometown of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She is the top-ranked junior in the Dominican, and this year competed for her country in Fed Cup competition. Bernardez has valuable ITF experience competing in several events and earning a rank of #634 in the world. Bernardez also comes to Providence with an impressive doubles background rarely found in the top juniors, as she has won multiple ITF titles in doubles.

In addition to her talent and accomplishments on the court, Maria is also an exceptional student, having earned an academic scholarship to Providence. She is the daughter of Manuel Bernardez and Lourdes Desangles, and a close friend of Friar freshman and top player Marisela Aviles-Duron. According to Coach LaBranche, "Maria is an accomplished player and dedicated student who will play a major role as Providence Tennis continues to improve and compete in the talented BIG EAST Conference."
