Dear Members of the Friar Community:

My sincere prayers and concern go out to Yerkin Abdrakhmanov, who was injured early on April 12, 2010 in an unprovoked assault by a Providence College student-athlete and a former Friar student-athlete. I am outraged and disappointed beyond words by the inexcusable behavior of these two individuals who have been permanently dismissed from the team. Their actions go against every core value of the College and its athletics department.

As Athletics Director, I apologize first to the victim of this assault and also to each of you for the pain and embarrassment this incident has caused. I pledge to you that I, along with the entire athletics department, am taking additional steps to ensure that we do all we can to prevent such incidents in the future.

There are more than 300 student-athletes at Providence College. The majority of these student-athletes work hard every day towards positive personal development. Our department takes seriously the responsibility to help them grow in character and I would ask that the actions of two individuals not be allowed to taint the hard work and contributions of so many others.

My most urgent concern is for Yerkin’s full recovery. I encourage those with questions and concerns regarding this incident to please contact me.

Sincerely,

Robert G. Driscoll, Jr.
