Box Score

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The Providence College men's hockey team played Merrimack to a 1-1 overtime tie Saturday night in the regular season finale at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass. Providence ends the season with a 10-20-4 overall record and 5-18-4 Hockey East, while Merrimack (15-17-2, 12-13-2 Hockey East) advances to the Hockey East Quarterfinals and will begin a three-game series next week.

The Friars jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as they capitalized on their first power play of the night at 1:09. Sophomore Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) tucked in a loose puck into the net from in close to give PC the early edge. It marked Bergland's 12th goal of the season as junior Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) and senior Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) assisted on the goal. The Warriors responded at 4:25 after a turnover in PC's zone and Adam Ross ripped a one timer into the top right corner of the net to tie the score at 1-1.

Neither team could score in the second period as the Warriors outshot the Friars, 16-9. PC sophomore goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) stopped all 16 shots in the second period, including a right pad save on a breakaway attempt by Brandon Brodhag at 10:35.

The Friars nearly took the lead at 4:04 of the third period when sophomore Andy Balysky (Randolph, N.J.) stole the puck in the neutral zone and had a breakaway down the left wing, but Balysky's shot was stopped by Merrimack goalie Andrew Braithwaite.

In overtime, Stephane Da Costa had a shot from point-blank range, but Beaudry made the save at 2:17 to keep the game tied. PC freshman Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) also had a chance to score the game winner, but his shot from the bottom of the right circle was saved by Braithwaite. Beaudry finished with 37 stops, while Braithwaite made 22 saves.
