Providence College women's tennis was defeated by Navy, 5-2, on Saturday, March 13 in Annapolis, Md. On Sunday, March 14 the Friars fell to BIG EAST foe Georgetown, 5-1, in Washington, D.C.
With the losses the Friars now hold a spring record of 1-6, a 4-7 overall record and a BIG EAST record of 0-1. Navy and Georgetown improve to 6-2 and 2-5, respectively.
The Friars were competitive with Navy throughout the day, winning at least one game in every set except one. Sophomore Rhode Island native Melissa Ferry (Cumberland, R.I.) and freshman Brittany Maddock (Marietta, Ga.) combined to defeat Julie Dias and Lindsay Olsen, 8-3, in No. 3 doubles play.
Ferry continued her winning ways in singles action as she put away Navy's Olsen in a competitive three-set match that was finally decided by an 11-9 super-tiebreak. Freshman Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) was also victorious in singles play, winning the No. 1 match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Junior Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) dropped a close match in the No. 2 slot, 4-6, 6-4, (10-4).
On Saturday the Friars traveled across state lines to Washington, D.C. where they dropped a 5-1 decision against the Hoyas.
The women's tennis team is back in action on Saturday, March 20 when they take on St. John's in Queens, N.Y. On Sunday, March 21 the Friars will travel to Jersey City, N.J. to face St. Peter's in a non-conference match-up.
