TAMPA, Fla - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated, 99-93, at the University of South Florida on Saturday, February 27 in Tampa, Fla. Senior Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) and sophomore Jamine Peterson (Bronx, N.Y.) each scored 26 points to lead the Friars.
Providence shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half and held a 48-46 lead after 20 minutes of play. Junior Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) led a balanced offensive attack with 10 points. Freshman Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Curry chipped in nine points each.
In the second half, the Friars held a nine-point lead (82-73) with 7:37 left in the game. However, USF went on an 18-8 run over five minutes to take a one-point lead (91-90). The Friars got the lead back (93-92) when Curry hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds left in the game. USF's Dominique Jones took the inbounds pass and went the length of the floor to score. He also was fouled on the play and a technical foul also was called on the play. Jones hit all three free throws to extend the lead to four points (97-93) with 14 seconds left and put the game out of reach.
Providence College will return to action on Thursday, March 4 at nationally ranked Pittsburgh at 9:00 p.m. on ESPN2.
