LOWELL, Mass. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by UMass Lowell, 4-0, Friday night in a Hockey East game played at Tsongas Center. UMass Lowell scored three times in the second period to break open the game and seal the win. UML's Carter Hutton made 30 saves to earn the shutout.
The River Hawks (17-14-2, 11-11-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 3:25 into the first period as senior Steve Capraro scored his first career goal on a shot from the left point. The Friars (10-19-2, 5-17-2) nearly scored the equalizer at 15:50 when junior Paul Golden (Milton, Mass.) skated on a breakaway, but his wrist shot was turned aside by Hutton.
In the second period, the River Hawks scored three times in a span of 6:30 to increase their lead to 4-0. Scott Campbell made the score, 2-0, at 9:24 with his 12th goal of the season. At 11:13, Chris Auger potted his seventh goal from in close, while Jonathan Maniff completed the second period scoring with his first goal of the season at 15:54.
PC sophomore goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) made 34 saves in two periods, while sophomore Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.) and Ryan Simpson (Bow, N.H.) combined to make 13 stops.
The two teams will complete the weekend series tomorrow night at Schneider Arena, beginning at 7:00 a.m. The game will air live on Cox Sports.
