Friar Fanatics,

The Trustees were on campus last week and I had the opportunity to provide them with an update on a number of initiatives we are working on in the athletic department.

We are putting the final touches on the design of our state-of-the-art soccer/lacrosse/track complex. The facility is part of our strategy plan to provide our soccer, lacrosse, cross country and track programs to compete successfully in the BIG EAST Conference and on a national level. Once the plans are complete, we will be presenting the plans to alumni and Friars around the country, seeking fundraising dollars for its construction. The new facility is estimated to cost between five and seven million dollars.

I also presented the Trustees with a proposal to create a new “vision” plan to build our men’s basketball program into a national contender on a consistent basis. We have a core group of Trustees and alumni that are willing to be part of our vision team to provide guidance and resources to build our program. By investing in this vision, we hope to build a basketball program that models the likes of Villanova. The success of basketball would have a huge impact not only on all the other sports, but on the entire college in terms of national exposure, admissions and fundraising.

We have just four weeks left before we host the First & Second Rounds of the 2010 NCAA Basketball Championship in Providence. The Dunkin’ Donuts Center and the City have been hard at work putting together the final components on this great event.

Furthermore, I am pleased to see that women’s ice hockey is among the top contenders for the regular season Hockey East Championship and that our women’s basketball team has already won 14 games, the most since the 1992-93 season when the Friars went 15-15. See you around Friartown.

Go Friars!!
