PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Brown University, 55-30, in the first game of the Brown BEAR Classic on December 3 at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Seniors Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) and Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) each netted 11 points in the victory.

The Friars broke the game open early, taking a 25-7 lead into the four-minute media timeout behind four-consecutive three-point baskets. Three of the treys were scored by junior transfer Rachel Barnes (Windsor, Conn.), while freshman Danielle Pearson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added the fourth. The three-point barrage was the highlight of a 16-2 scoring run. The Friars took a 29-10 lead into the locker room at halftime. Barnes led the offense with nine points, while the Bears got a team-best four points from Lauren Clarke.

Providence outscored the Bears 26-20 in the second half. Hankins scored seven of her 11 points in the final 20 minutes of action.

Sheila Dixon led Brown with nine points in the losing effort, while Hannah Passafuime added seven points and a team-best seven rebounds.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, December 4 against Florida for the second game of the Brown BEAR Classic. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
