FREEPORT, GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Arizona State, 63-56, on Friday, November 26 in its opening game of the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island.

The Sun Devils jumped out to a 20-6 lead with 11:40 left to play in the first half behind eight points from Becca Tobin. The Friars rallied to get within seven (20-13) on seven-straight points from junior Rachel Barnes (Windsor, Conn.) with 9:36 on the clock. Sophomore guard Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) added a team-best eight points in the first half for the Friars, including six-straight points in the final 1:46 heading into halftime. Providence was plagued by poor shooting in the opening 20 minutes, hitting just 10-of-34 attempts from the field (29.4-percent). Arizona State connected on 14-of-32 attempts from the floor (43.8-percent).

Providence outscored the Sun Devils, 6-2, heading into the first media time-out of the second half to cut the deficit to five (34-29). Junior Lola Wells (Fontana, Calif.) fueled the run with four of the Friars' six points.

Arizona State then went on a 6-0 run to make the score 40-29 with 13:41 to play. Senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) halted the run with back-to-back buckets to get Providence within seven (40-33) with 10:58 to play. Freshman Lauren Okafor (New Haven, Conn.) made it a five-point game (40-35) at 9:53 with a lay-up, but ASU answered with a lay-in at the other end to push the lead back to seven (42-35).

Providence had a chance to cut the lead to three with just under eight minutes to play, but ASU grabbed the defensive board off a missed lay-up and drained a three-pointer at the other end with 7:43 on the clock to make the score 45-37. The Friars closed the game with a 19-18 scoring edge to make the final tally, 63-56.

Roberts led the Friar offense with 18 points and Wright posted 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds. All 10 of Wright's points came in the second half. Barnes finished the evening with nine points. Senior Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) joined Wright with seven rebounds.

ASU's Dymond Simon and Becca Tobin each netted a team-high 11 points, while Janae Fulcher contributed 10. Tobin grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, November 27 in the consolation game against the loser of the Florida State vs. Alabama match-up. Tip-off is slated for 5:45 p.m.
