Women's Tennis Finishes Fall Season At Regional Championships

The Providence College women's tennis team competed in the ITA Northeast Regional Championships over the weekend. The first, second and third rounds of the event were held Friday through Sunday in Hanover, N.H. The Friars entered sophomore Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) in the Main Singles Tournament and had Aviles-Duron team up with freshman Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) in the Main Doubles Tournament.
On Saturday, in the first round of the Main Singles Tournament Draw, Aviles-Duron came back to defeat St. John's top player, Joanna Zwirbulis, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. In the second round of the tournament, Aviles-Duron fell to fifth-seeded Molly Scott of the host school, Dartmouth (6-3, 6-0).
In doubles action, Aviles-Duron and Bernardez were defeated by Boston College in the first round. The ninth-seeded Golden Eagles won by a score of 8-4.
The Friars are off until March 4, 2011, when they will travel to the eastside of Providence to face Brown.
NOTES: The Championships featured top players from over 20 Division I schools from around the northeast. The Main Singles Tournament was comprised of 80 players.
