Friar Faithful,

First and foremost, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great holiday season with your families and that you’re excited about the start of the New Year. I know we are, here in Friartown.

A lot has happened since I last blogged in November. We have been hard at work putting the finishing touches on the planning for the NCAA First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament which will take place on March 18 and 20 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. In December, members of the NCAA came to Providence for a site visit and, I am proud to say, were particularly impressed with the city and the newly renovated Dunk.

In an earlier blog, I shared with you my visit to West Point, N.Y. to meet with Lieutenant Colonel Doty and Dr. Ralph Pim regarding the “Cadet Leadership Program” they have created at Army. We recently hosted their leadership team to help develop a similar leadership initiative here at Providence College. This leadership initiative, dubbed “Operation Providence,” will be the first formal collegiate program of its kind. My hope is that the program will serve as a vehicle for our student-athletes and athletics department staff alike to truly exhibit our espoused values, improve leadership mentalities and ultimately, make us better people.

In addition to our new leadership initiative, we have some other exciting events on tap this month with the dedication of our $500,000 Friends of Friar Club Room in Schneider Arena. The brand new facility was made possible thanks to a generous gift from Judge Bill Leary and his wife, Emily. The club room will be named after Bill and Emily as a tribute to their generosity and continued support of Friar Athletics.

That’s all for now… Go Friars!
