PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College women's tennis team will face intrastate rival Rhode Island on Thursday, October 1. The meeting will mark the eighth time the two squads have met within the last seven seasons. The last time the Friars beat the Rams was during the 2003-04 season when Providence edged Rhode Island, 4-3.
The Friars are led by freshman, No. 1 singles player Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras). Aviles-Duron has defeated all of her opponents in singles head-to-head team play and defeated the fifth overall seed on route to the quarterfinals of the No. 1 singles tournament at the ITA Eastern Championships in West Point, N.Y. Providence has also seen impressive play from fellow freshman Courtney Burek (Wheaton, Ill.). Burek has won all three No. 3 singles matches in Providence's head-to-head meetings, including two hard-fought three set matches.
The University of Rhode Island is 1-0 this season in head-to-head matches, winning its only meeting on the road against Bryant University, 7-0. The Rams are led by sophomore No. 1 singles player, Kirsten Leikem. Leikem teamed up with her sister, sophomore Tristany Leikem to win the Flight A doubles tournament at the Quinnipiac Invitational on September 20 and had a good showing at the ITA Eastern Championships last weekend.
