It has been a busy week in Friartown as our fall sports have hit full stride.
Most recently, 325 Providence College student-athletes attended our annual Student-Athlete Kick-off meeting in Alumni Hall. The main points of the meeting were to introduce and welcome Friar newcomers to the Providence College family and instill specific values. The core values of Providence College Athletics are (in no specific order) honesty, integrity, mutual respect, effort and constant improvement. I strongly believe core values are undeniably important to success in the classroom, on the playing field and ultimately, in life. Along with these core values, I reiterated what we, as an athletic department, are trying to accomplish; to be the most respected among our collegiate peers, to exhibit a 100 percent graduation rate among our student-athletes and to compete for championships.
On a side note, the old BIG EAST team banners in Alumni Hall have been replaced with high-quality stickers on the windows parallel to the court's baselines. Each sticker is a logo of a BIG EAST conference school. These stickers are transparent on one side and opaque on the other, allowing for fans to look into Alumni Gym without being seen.
The completion of the new "sticker banners" marks the end of the planned renovations to Alumni Hall. I can safely say that this is the best condition I have seen Alumni Hall in a long time.
In other news, we taped our first edition of Inside Friartown. The show, which airs on the Cox channel, highlights our fall sports teams. In my segment, the "A.D.'s Corner," I talk to special guest, Providence College men's soccer head coach, Chaka Daley. Inside Friartown airs Mondays at 9:00 p.m., Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. and Sundays at 11:30 a.m.
Stay tuned for next week's blog, as I will give an in-depth blog about my trip to West Point, N.Y. where I had lunch with 4,000 cadets and met with a Lieutenant Colonel who shared thoughts of how to go about building leaders through sport.
Go Friars!
