Providence College Finishes 91st in 2008-09 Directors' Cup

Providence College finished 91st out of 271 Division I colleges and universities in the 2008-09 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, racking up 200.50 points.  Stanford University clinched its 15th consecutive Directors' Cup, tallying 1455.00 total points.

The Directors' Cup was first awarded in 1993-94. Since its inception, the Friars have finished among the top-100 a total of 11 times, including five of the last six years.

 

The women's outdoor track team placed 29th at the NCAA championships, landing the Friars 42.5 points for the spring season.  Providence earned 73 points in the winter season from the women's indoor track team for its 45th place finish at the NCAA Championships (26.5 points) and the men's indoor track team's 27th place finish (46.5).  The Friars earned 85 points from fall sports, as women's cross country tallied 51 points for its 13th place finish, and men's cross country earned 34 points for its 20th place finish. 

 

Among the 16 BIG EAST Conference members, Providence College ranked eighth.  Notre Dame led the conference with its 21st place finish, tallying 775.13 points.  Louisville (32nd), West Virginia (50th), Connecticut (52nd) and Villanova (56th) rounded out the top five BIG EAST finishes.

 

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.  Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 women's and 10 men's.
