It's going to be an exciting weekend in Friartown! We will induct 11 new members into our athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, February 20. On Saturday, February 21, we will retire former Friar great John Egan's jersey to the rafters of the Dunkin' Donuts Center at halftime of the men's basketball game versus Notre Dame. It should be fun as many of our alums will be back for Homecoming Weekend.
As many of you know, Providence College was selected to host for the First and Second Rounds of the 2010 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Tickets go on sale to the general public on March 23. We are about to start a pre-sale event for all of our loyal donors and season ticket holders. This is a very special event and we are thrilled to able to offer our most loyal fans an opportunity to buy tickets before they go on sale to the general public.
Sophomore David McCarthy and junior Hayden McLaren of our men's track and field team both ran sub-four minute miles at the Valentine Invitational on Saturday, February 14. McCarthy's 3:57.75 finish and McLaren's 3:57.78 time qualified each of our athletes for the NCAA Championships to be held March 13-14 at Texas A&M University. Those were the third and fourth fastest mile times ever at Providence College.
Our women's basketball team will host the No. 1 team in the nation this week as the University of Connecticut comes to sold-out Alumni Hall on Wednesday, February 21. This is a PinkZone game, raising money to help with Breast Cancer Research. At halftime, we'll be presenting a check to Mr. Joe Gemma from the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.
Our men's basketball team earned a 78-68 victory on Valentines Day over Big East rival, Rutgers. Senior Weyinmi Efejuku led the Friars with a game-high 25 points. With only two more games at home this year, our men's basketball is looking to make a push towards the post season.
The Providence College men's lacrosse team opened its spring season at No. 1 ranked Syracuse this past week. They were defeated by the defending national champions but fought hard as senior attack Bobby Labadini led PC with two goals and freshman attack Evan Olsen netted his first career score for the Friars in the second half. The Friars are off until Saturday, February 28 when they open the home portion of the schedule with a 1:00 p.m. contest against the Hobart College Statesmen.
The BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championship events start today in Indianapolis, Ind. The Friars had 14 swimmers qualify for the championships this year. The first session starts today at noon, and continue through Saturday, February 21.
Our men's and women's hockey teams are wrapping up their seasons over the next couple of weeks and hope to win some big games as they look toward the Hockey East Tournament.
Go Friars!
