NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The Providence College men's hockey team and Merrimack College played to a 1-1 overtime tie Saturday in a Hockey East game at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead at 11:13 of the first period when Grant Farrell slipped a long pass through the middle to Chris Barton who skated in on a breakaway before firing a shot that deflected off PC freshman goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario) and into the net. The Friars responded at 12:42 when freshman Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) potted his eighth goal of the season. Senior Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) gained possession of the puck behind the Merrimack net and played it out front. The puck then bounced off sophomore Ian O'Connor's skate, but Bergland pounced on the loose puck and put it past Joe Cannata to tie the game at 1-1. The Warriors had a chance to take the lead at 16:04 when Jeff Velleca was awarded a penalty shot, but Beaudry was able to make a left pad save to keep the game tied.
The Friars carried the play in the second period, outshooting the Warriors, 13-8, but neither team could score the rest of the way. The Friars moved to 7-17-5 and 4-13-5 in Hockey East. Merrimack is now 7-18-4 and 3-16-3 in league play. Beaudry finished with 29 saves, while Cannata stopped 32 shots.
The two teams will complete the two-game series on Sunday, February at 4:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
