KINGSTON, R.I. -

The Providence College men's basketball team (5-3) fell to the University of Rhode Island (5-1) by a score of 86-82 on Saturday, Dec. 5 before a sold-out crowd at the Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I. The Friars held a 14-point lead at halftime, but were outscored by 18 points (51-33) in the second half by the Rams. Sophomore forward Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Friars with 20 points and 11 rebounds, senior guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) added 17 points and freshman guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) notched 16 points, six rebounds and six assists for PC. For Peterson, it marked his fourth double-double in the past six games.

The Friars opened the game with a bang on a dunk by Peterson. After the teams traded baskets for the next eight minutes of play, a put-back lay-in by freshman forward/center Bilal Dixon (Jersey City, N.J.) moved the Friars ahead 16-14 at the 11:16 mark of the first half. Another follow by Dixon extended the PC advantage to six and a good finish by Peterson completed an 11-0 run by the Friars that gave the team a 22-14 lead. A jumper by Curry moved the score to 35-26 with 5:28 remaining in the half and a three-pointer by senior Brian McKenzie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) gave the Friars a 12-point lead at 47-35. The team entered halftime ahead, 49-35.

The Friars shot 57.6 percent (19-33) in the half and ran an effective offense around the basket, outscoring the Rams 30-to-15 in the paint. Curry and McKenzie contributed 13 points each to lead Providence.

URI came out strong to open the second half, using a 14-1 run to move within three at 54-51 at the 14:54 mark. A lay-in by freshman guard Duke Mondy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) built the Friar lead back to six at 61-55, but the Rams rallied back to tie the score at 69 with 6:18 to go in the game. With 5:01 to play, a 3-pointer by Akeem Richmond gave the Rams their first lead (72-70) since the 12:03 mark of the first half. With the Rams holding a 74-72 lead, junior guard/forward Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) made a 3-pointer and was fouled, completing the 4-point play to move the Friars back ahead, 76-74. But with the score tied at 78, Keith Cothran hit two free throws for Rhody and the Rams took a two-point lead. A jumper by Marquis Jones gave the Rams a four-point lead at 82-78. After Curry hit two free throws, the Friars moved within two (84-82), but on the ensuing inbounds pass, Peterson accidentally touched the ball, leading to a technical foul that effectively sealed the win for the Rams.

Cothran led the Rams in scoring with 19 points while providing five assists. The Rams shot 41.5 percent from the field in the second half and made 15-of-17 (88.2 percent) free-throw attempts.
