Friar Fans,
I am excited to announce that we have inked a contract with the Dunkin' Donuts Center which will solidify our relationship for the next five years. Over the past three years we have worked closely with the RI Convention Center Authority and the Dunk to invest over $80 million in renovations. The final piece will be the installation of a state-of-the-art video scorer's table, which will be installed in two weeks. The complete renovation of the Dunk marks a new age in Friar basketball and is directly related to why we are hosting the 2009-10 NCAA Tournament 1st and 2nd rounds. I would like to thank Governor Carcieri and the city of Providence for their support in making this first-class facility possible.
On Saturday, November 14 we held the cross country and track alumni reunion in '64 Hall. We celebrated the success of the cross country team as the women placed second and the men placed third at the NCAA Regional Championships. The strong finish qualifies both teams for the NCAA Cross Country Championships held in Terre Haute, Ind. This will mark the thirteenth appearance in 14 years for the men's squad and the 21st consecutive appearance for the women. At the event, I spoke about the need for us to raise money for a brand new track, soccer and lacrosse facility located on Hendricken Field. The proposed sports complex will help to sustain the great legacy of Providence College cross country and track.
In other news, despite a tough loss to eventual BIG EAST Tournament Champion St. John's on Saturday, our men's soccer team has put together an impressive end to the season by defeating five of their last six opponents including an upset over powerhouse Connecticut. Congratulations to the team on a good season.
Finally, the men's basketball team got off to a great start this weekend by defeating Bryant, Bucknell and Mercer en route to winning the World Vision Invitational. I must admit that I was nervous during the six minute scoring drought on Sunday, but our team did well to pull out the W. Thanks to World Vision and their continued efforts to fight malaria around the world.
As always, Go Friars!
