AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) made a career-high 47 saves as the Providence College men's hockey team defeated No. 17 Massachusetts, 2-1, at the Mullins Center in Amherst. With the win, the Friars improved to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in Hockey East action. The Minutemen suffered their first defeat as they move to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead at the 6:15 mark of the first period as junior Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) scored his second goal of the season. Freshman Alex Velischek (Kinnelon, N.J.) slid the puck to the top of the left circle to MacKinnon who ripped a shot past UMass goalie Paul Dainton. Senior Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) also assisted on the goal.
Providence increased its lead to 2-0 at the 10:53 mark of the second period when sophomore Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) scored his team leading fifth goal of the season. Fayne wrapped the puck along the right wing boards to junior Jordan Kremyr (Cloverdale, B.C.), who rushed up ice before firing a shot that was saved by Dainton. However, Bergland raced to the rebound and fired a high wrist shot over Dainton's shoulder.
The Minutemen cut the lead in half as they scored a power-play goal at 1:49 of the third period. Matt Irwin ripped a slap shot from the high slot that beat Beaudry. Casey Wellman and T.J. Syner assisted on the goal. UMass carried the play the rest of the way, but Beaudry held his ground. The Minutemen had a chance to score the equalizer as they went on the power play at 16:25. Providence was able to thwart that man advantage as Beaudry made a point-blank save on a shot from the slot by Will Ortiz at 17:46.
For Beaudry, whose previous career high was 42 stops at UMass on January 16, 2009, it marks his third-career 40-plus save performance.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, November 8 at 4:00 p.m. when they play at Vermont.
